Essential knowledge: The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively do the task outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage the task and manage contingencies in the context of the identified work role This includes knowledge of: Anatomy and physiology, in both adults and children, relevant to performing basic CPR, including clients with altered cardiac function Boundaries of responsibilities and ability to refer problems to supervisor, anaesthetist or other appropriate health professional Critical information to communicate to medical/paramedical personnel Current techniques for CPR in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines Different types of support/comfort for adults and children Electrical safety requirements Expected period of recovery following the incident Identification and significance of potential hazards to self and others Levels of consciousness |
Essential skills: It is critical that the candidate demonstrate the ability to: Comply with organisation policies and procedures including those of WHS and infection control, and current standards Identify of various emergency conditions Respond to emergencies and maintain clients vital functions Understand and implement current techniques for CPR in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines In addition, the candidate must be able to effectively do the task outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage the task and manage contingencies in the context of the identified work role This includes the ability to: Assess and maintain a client's vital functions Communicate with people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds Deal with conflict Demonstrate the methods and procedures for dealing with emergencies Display empathy with client and relatives Manage potential hazards Recognise emergency conditions Solve problems including the ability to use available resources Use numeracy skills ranging from the ability to complete basic arithmetic calculations, recording stock levels and statistical information Use oral communication skills-language competence required to fulfil job roles in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation. Assessors should look for skills in asking questions, providing clear information, listening to and understanding workplace instructions, and clarifying workplace instructions when necessary. Effective verbal and non verbal communication skills with a range of internal and external persons are essential. Method of assessment: | Clinical skills involving direct client care are to be assessed initially in a simulated clinical setting (laboratory). If successful, a second assessment is to be conducted during workplace application under direct supervision. Observation of work activities when performing CPR in a cardiac testing environment Observation of simulation and/or role play when performing CPR in a cardiac testing environment Discussion of physical and/or behavioural contingency scenarios involving duty of care Authenticated transcripts of relevant education/training courses Recognition of relevant life/work experience Questioning, written assessments/projects can be used to assess knowledge Authenticated evidence of relevant work experience and/or formal/informal learning Authenticated evidence of experience in performing CPR in a cardiac testing environment (Documentation associated with performance reviews, supervisor/coordinator evaluations of work performance) Training records associated with first aid, occupational health and safety training, orientation/induction training, safe manual handing, universal infection control procedures |
